Winfred Obruk.Winfred Obruk, one of the original contributors to the 1951 edition of the Eskimo Cookbook in his home in Shishmaref, Alaska in March 2010 ..Winfred's recipe in the book was a traditional Inupiat recipe for bear, a delicacy in Shishmaref. Much of the village until recently has lived a subsistence way of life for generations. With western foods entering the village through the two general stores and the school, however, many of the younger generations prefer processed American goods to their Native foods, and the elderly who usually rely on their youths to hunt and cook have adjusted to the change. Winfred no longer cooks, but instead leaves the cooking up to his son, Charlie, who prepared ground beef tacos for dinner the evening of our visit.
