“I lost my twin sister in 1988. My daughter in there [inside the house] is named after her. Her name is Lucy.” — Linda Soplu is “amaq-ing” (Inupiaq for packing) her Grandson George Soplu. Both are Inupiaq from Kaktovik, Alaska. Both Inupiat and Yup’ik have traditionally named newborn babies after people who have recently passed away. It is believed that those who have been named after those who have passed on take on characteristics of their namesake.
