Kaktovik is located on Barter Island in the North Slope region of Alaska and has a population of about 250 residents. Kaktovik (Qaaktuġvik in Inupiaq) translates to “Seining Place” because it is a traditional place to seine fish. It also was a traditional bartering area for Inupiat from Alaska and Inuit from Canada to come to trade.
